The 50mm could be used, but I am not sure I would buy one specifically for this purpose.
It depends on how big the box is going to be and what you are taking pictures of. I just used my 24-105 as there was enough light and the long end let me get close, the kit lens would probably also work...

One thing worth noting is that most of the cheaper screens are a "TN" panel, which cannot reproduce all colours accurately according to some people in the processing sections of some photography forums. I have one (TN) and can't say that I have any problems, but apparently it is a big issue for...
just set up a scheduled task to run on his pc. Its the easiest way. For fun cmd prompts, stick nircmd (free) on his pc first and you can do no end of stuff to drive him mad with prompts. (turn his screen upside down, speaker volume to full, eject cd's etc. )
Not wanting to be harsh, but are you actually spending out a fair bit of cash on this or is it just a sort of joke/ hobby? Paint can't be cheap and it seems like a waste to put it on some of those panels in the condition that they are in.
You need to put the program shortcut in your "start up", folder in the start menu. That way it will start with windows each time. It is part of the installation process but you may have unchecked it.
I really like the blurred lights shot. The others are also impressive. I would be interested to see some of the eye taken with a larger aperture to see how they looked without the stars.
Nice shot and processing. You should photoshop your reflection with a racing helmet on as an "insight to your mental state" or something along those lines.
