3g will not work yet. The main problem you will have is that you cannot buy them in the US without a contract. There are some european countries you can get them from already unlocked without contract though, although you pay a lot for them.

Check out a program called "Evil MSN". No Viruses and it has some fun features if you are that way inclined... it also says it can check if you are blocked but I have not tested it.
