You can still set recordings without the TiVo being connected to the router. You just can't use the app as a remote or stream content to an iOS device. That's my understanding anyway, and how it's working for me at the moment.

If you're clever about it, you can avoid the charges. I was in the States earlier this year. Made about 2 hours of calls back home to the UK. Cost me £0.00. FaceTime and Skype saved me there. It does of course depend on the technology the person you're calling is using. That was a holiday...

It's a pointless exercise IMO, unless it's in better condition that when it rolled of the production line (i.e. concourse). The next buyer isn't going to care that an 8 year old Clio spent it's 8th winter in a garage.
It's all well and good saying "drive to the conditions" etc, but what happens when some kid runs out into the road, or you get cut up doing 70+ on the m/way and you need to hit the anchors? That's where the decent rubber is needed. Those rare emergency occasions. IMO.
