The signal quality is fine with my router so I would imagine the problem is with the router itself.
If I get another router would bridge mode work as a pass through like a modem only mode, so it just provides the data and the other router can handle the rest?

Unless you have a tune on the DSG they can be really frustrating at times.
Manual mode is a must around town and then when you get on it a bit more it won't give you downshifts when you want, it's a bit slow to react and it will change up for you even in manual mode.
