I've always just given the registration number, any factory fitted extras should be identifiable through that where traced back to the manufacturer, so sod it!

172 and un-cup'd 182 shockers have a design flaw in that they can't be manufactured reliably.
It's a known fault and a common one, if only one shock has burst, dont be tempted to replace the opposite one so as to 'match new to new' as the chances...
I've had 5 replaced over 2 years, all of which were under 1 year old at the time of replacement.
never paid a penny for them but I think in your case Muzz it might not be so easy to make em pay. Mine have been going consistently since the car was 3 months old!
