I've always just given the registration number, any factory fitted extras should be identifiable through that where traced back to the manufacturer, so sod it!

Muzz, print this out and take it with you. 172 and un-cup'd 182 shockers have a design flaw in that they can't be manufactured reliably. It's a known fault and a common one, if only one shock has burst, dont be tempted to replace the opposite one so as to 'match new to new' as the chances...

I've had 5 replaced over 2 years, all of which were under 1 year old at the time of replacement. never paid a penny for them but I think in your case Muzz it might not be so easy to make em pay. Mine have been going consistently since the car was 3 months old!
