It might be related to whether they have a little tab in them or not, stops the angle sensor rotating/ allows indicators to cancel. Just get a momo boss for ESP.

Ahh. What's your cheap reader? You should see a code with the reader. You can also try disconnecting the battery for an hour then plug it back in. Should reset the ECU

I'd not realised it was the original climate panel with the dials. It is a bit odd that it stayed on, but if the resistor is having a fit it may be giving odd signals back. Believe the recirculation panel just relies on the motors behind moving the cogs. It could be one of these has failed...
