Yeah GTI was a 1.8. Wasn't really that quick really. I had a couple with a 2.0-litre Zetec in, as it was a really easy upgrade and made a reasonable difference, though still not as quick as the RS. Not that any of them are quick by modern standards!

On a P-plate, it could be an RS2000 or a GTI. Or just a lower model with the skirts of course. Had loads of those Escorts over the years. Still have a soft spot for them.

I would do the cams and see how you feel. It's not that much money to try it (compared to forced induction anyway!), and you might think, "That's enough". If you're still left wanting, you can then look at going further

I find it a very interesting car in a way. It appears very divisive. It was regarded as being pretty average by the motoring press, but many owners seem to adore them. Now it's been replaced by a transverse AWD version, the motoring hacks mourn the passing of the old one.

I do love this car, but I think I would have to have a complete rear bumper.

I know what you mean. Big cars don't really do much for me generally. I do quite like the 5-Series, and would probably have one as a "throw stuff in the back of" wagon, or as a tow car, but I think a Golf/Focus/1-Series car is about perfect for most stuff. Says the guy who drives a 197 😂

I went round the 'ring as a passenger in an M6. It was an absolute weapon. Modern cars hide their weight very well tbh.
