I think that the OP is happy that the pictures from a £300 camera are better than the £3 camera inside his BlackBerry, which from my experience are neither very good at being a phone, a camera or anything what so ever to do with fruit, as the name may suggest...
They're generally suggested to be used when the average temp is below 7 deg. C.
As it's in the 20s at the moment, I don't think you'd be best off putting them on just now, unless your 'normal' tyres are borderline illegal !?
Well, no it's slower and carries less people, and does worse fuel...

I've got the 'old' version but I love it. Haven't used the newer [faster] one to compare, but to save what looks to be about £100... the 'old' one will do just fine I'm sure !
Also, you're dead right on the glass being most important...
My Sigma 10-20 is my fav lens. I'm pretty sure there is a Nikon one ?!
Sharp enough from f/8 for shots like that.
