yeah i know that :) , works fine, just oily residue is less than ideal in electrics. As an example, an oil leak from a cam cover into a plug hole can cause the same sort of misfire.
i'd say water in the electrics, likely around the coil and plugs. I wouldn't use oil around these as it could be just as bad as water. Drying things out with a bit of compressed air would be better. If you cant get compressed air, an aerosol of brake/carb cleaner will work well and leave no oily...
if it's all bolt on parts it's no different to modifying though, and in reality a huge amount of brand new cars have already had paint repairs before they even leave the factory, I know a couple of people who've done it as a job.
