Basically mate, the diff isn't an issue as that's easily remedied! It'll need at a guess, bearings, 3rd gear, 4th gear, 3rd/4th selector ring (doubles up as reverse - don't ask) and then a few seals. That's a bill of £350 to £450 just in parts! Option 1 or 2 will result in the above mate...

Well those quotes are the current 2015 prices - I'm expecting them to increase next year for both the gripper and the Quaife. You'll need a few specialist tools to get the box open, but other than that they're actually quite a straight forward box to strip - assuming you've done a few already...

Hubs and Quaife and Meg 5th gear is the combo I'll be running. :up:

Yep they're the ones. Combine that with a worn plastic selector bush and it adds load to the bush everytime you change gear.

How high is the gear lever when your hand is on it to select gear mate? Maybe a side on shot with your hand on the steering wheel and one on your gear lever would give you a good pic. You'll obviously need an assistant to take the pic though!

Once you've got the upper inlet off etc, you'll find there's loads of room tbf. I also took my alternator and brackets off before lifting it out just to gain even more space, but it's not totally necessary.

The loom stays in the car. When I took mine out I unplugged all the sensors and laid the loom over the n/s headlight. After that it's a case of unbolting the exhaust manifold, coolant pipes off, driveshafts out (drain the gear oil first - saves a mess when you pop the n/s shaft out), unbolt the...

182 breather plate won't fit on a 172 head unless someone's fitted the 182 cam cover. But that's a whole different can of worms to open! Lol

The grippers have modified plates in them now which cuts down on the noise by quite a lot, to the extent that they're hardly noticeable now.

@Dan@SJM - how's it gone with the gear cables btw? Meant to text and ask you, but I forgot!!
