Ive not put the Halfords stuff in yet, but Im thinking a synchro problem as suggested by Flying Scotsman. It NEVER crunches 3 - 4 if I allow the revs to die before shifting. Hmm....is this a new gear box thing? Is it repairable? I wanted to put a MK2 box in, but not right at this moment!

Sound like you need a MK2. MK1 doesnt have a great deal more than the Cup in terms of goodies (no xenons, no auto lights, no climate control, no autowipers). The interior of the MK2 looks and feels better too (but rattles exactly the same).
Theres not a great deal separating the 3 models...
Rich - If you dont trust GPS, take it up with the US Army! Just saying that 145 was the highest recorded speed on my GPS unit. Dont fancy trying it again. Car was really straining and had to get a run down hill. Took ages to get from 142 to 145!!! And yes, the speedos are damned accurate if...

Stromba - are...
I dont get any clunks in any other gears, and it doesnt do it every time. In fact, it probably does it more from cold than at any other time. Where can I get this gearbox stuff and can I replace the gearbox oil myself or is it a Ren*ult job?
lol, get one. You know you want to! I went from a 1.4 16v to a 172 as well, and never regretted it. Just be prepared to use a touch more petrol than before
vavavoom - I tell you what, it is really starting to measure up. I know some people really dont like wheel spacers (i know the arguements, Ive decided to risk it!), but theyve really changed the handling. Certainly enough to cope with whatever you chuck at it, which is what made the Willy so...
Watched a copper yesterday in a marked 306 drive with one hand on the wheel at 12oclock position at about 45 in a 30 before braking right before the sensors in the road.
Unless Im really slow with the gear change, I get a CRUNCH going into 4th gear (MK1 172). Its starting to piss me right off now. Is this indicative of a dying gearbox?
