Trev_m has 17s on and lowered it 40mm the pics are in the gallery. He may post he and give you a better answer.
I know they will fit with no probs with up to a 25mm drop but after that I think there may be a few probs.

Thats how I think, would like the power increase but not the noise. May consider it in the future.

A MK2 172 has a smoother torque curve which means a smoother powers delivery throughout a wider rev range whereas the mk1 had a very sharp curve meaning that you got more of a kick in the back when max torque was reached making the car feel quicker the unknowing driver.
