Interesting that most detailers offer an engine detail as part of their service range. Also interesting that cars can go through puddles and not have issues.
Use some common sense, as Danny has said. But engines can be cleaned without inflicting damage.

Shame, you're not far from my old location but now based in London. Other wise, would have been more than happy to take a gander/help in my Cheshire to Birmingham drive (most weekends last year!).
It looks like scratching in the lacquer, if they are matt white.
If Tardis, IronX and polish hasn't worked, try claying. Last resort, but I can't see that shifting unfortunately. Very hard to tell when you're not there in person, but that's all I can suggest really.

Of course there are good and bad smart repairers, but they only have a certain amount of space/time/money/resources to achieve the finish, so it will always be hindered by this. I spent £100 on a mobile smart repair on my bumper. It's awful, but...
