It works by measuring how much current it takes to heat it to a certain temperature. The more it is emersed in oil, the more current it needs to build up to the certain temperature. This is how it works it out.
Its down the back of the engine block below the starter motor.

Iv always done it like this...
Remove 13mm pinch bolt holding the rack to the collumn (normally under a rubber cone near to the bulk head) - If you dont do this you will get problems.
Remove ball joints from hubs
Remove 16mm nut from front engine mount
Remove two 13mm bolts from subframe...
if its the early type 1.2 the inlet air temp will be inside the manifold near the throttle body. If its the later type it will be plopped in the manifold somwhere.
Novas have tapered roller bearings and are meant to have play to allow for expansion.
Mos modern cars, including renaults have contact bearings so they dont have play. If its noisy, it will have corrosion in the races and will get worse.
Theres a plastic clip that is riveted to the top right corner of the window that keeps it in the runner. It will have come off and dropped into the door.
There is a known issue with some units made in that year as brun says. There is a chip inside the radio that cannot take the cold temperatures. This can cause battery drains because it does not turn the display off, and the radio to not respond at all when you turn it on. You can get it working...
Normally means the injection computer isnt recieving or recognising the immo code. (or the ECU isnt being powered).
Try, turning the ignition on for 30 seconds then off, lock and unlock the car and try it then.
