Get a quote from a garage and see how the prices stack up. Remember his time isn't free, I know he's a mate but he's got to make something out of it too.
The gearbox issues aren't as common as people make out, it's only becuase we hear about them more with us being part of a forum. Their are thousands of 197 owners that haven't had issues, but they don't come on forums telling us that they HAVEN'T replaced their gearbox.
The cost of fixing the...
Build quality in the mk3 Clio is much better than the previous clios! My 70k 197 with cup chassis didn't rattle, squeak or feel cheap. Of course, they've got a lot of catching up to do with the Germans but they're fine!
You may be able to reuse the old clip, depends on the condition really. Failing that a jubilee clip will be fine.
Why on earth did you have to swap the calipers?
I have the same situation. My commute is only 7 miles. 5.5 miles of motorway the rest town. I average between 20 and 22 mpg. Yet if I go on a journey of say 50 miles, mainly motorway/ dual carridgeway then I can get 40+mpg.
It's purely down to the journey and how I drive. I know my car is fine...
I had a similar issue on a pug 307 a few years ago. I used some silica based cat litter to draw the moisture out, it was fine after that. My headlight had an obvious break in the seal though, so i'd expect your's to be similar for that amount of moisture to have made it's way inside.
I'm asuming that's in reference to the speed comment and me chasing him down? If you saw the situation you would see why I called him a tool, you weren't - so your comments are invalid.
I love these!, I almost bought one a few years ago but ended up with my pug GTI-6 (which i'm glad about). As others have said, it's a shame about the boot but the rest is good! A little worrying that it's had a respray though? Cheap resprays never last very long.
I've just been behind one on...
Was the road flat or was it on a slight incline. The TDCI ST might only have 150ish bhp but they have nearly 300 lb-ft of torque (briefly, on overboost) so a slight hill would kill your weight advantage and the extra torque of the ST would easily allow him to pull away.
I proved this a couple...
I'm not sure how something that isn't due for at least a year can be used as a bartering point. If it was overdue then yes, due in a few weeks ok but due in 3 years (it's 6 years on the 200) or 16,000 miles is just a part of owning the car. My service is due in September, I bought the car in...
I just picked up this Nilfisk

its awesome!
The cup shock absorber won't affect the hight, that will be the spring - however you will still need to change it as the dampers are uprated (+15%?) on the cup models. It may well sit level but will ride funny due to the differing damping rates
Engines generate heat, the temperature gauge shows you this, it's entirely normal.
unless of course you mean it's going higher than normal? Your explanation isn't very clear to be honest.
