its not impending doom, mines been like it downchanging into 3rd and notchy in all gears when cold for ages and its got no worse, just show some mechanical sympathy and it'll be fine.

lessons in life, put up something you care about to a public forum, be prepared to find out others don't like it and if that's the case, don't take it personally.
i'd do the above, set the timing right if you suspect its out before you do anything else. do not comp test it with a loose belt, don't even turn it over with a loose belt. get that sorted then investigate the compression
I've never used spring compressors on standard cup springs, just push down on the top cap with minimal force until the nut is free and undo. done.............ime!

oh I know the reasoning chap, its just a drop in the ocean on something like a track car, I've had a short shift on the turbo for 7 years and its not that that's blowing the boxes, believe me!lol!
for track orientated cars there is a hell of a lot more strain on the box for other reasons, I don't think a short shift will make a jot of difference to the longevity of the box
ai I know, its terrible for performance but winter bwarp is a giggle :) and tbh (goes to whisper) 182's are a bit slow anyway aren't they ;)
