Knocking noise could be the exhaust hitting the subframe. Common issue I think most will agree. I had a similar issue and had all the mounts checked out by Mike @ Rentech.- Day

It's a button you press in on the righthand stalk. If you own a Mk1 172 it's not the one that's the horn. As I found sat in a traffic jam months back LOL- Day

HELP!! MK1 172, Weird Noise
Spray a little bit of sillicon lube up there first. Could be the bearings... I just replaced the tensioner one and it removed an annoying whine I've had for nearly a year!- Day
