Welcome along Colin, you wont be stuck on looking for a 'cheap' 172, they have almost plummeted in value recently! Anyone will tell you though, service history is key - belt changes namley. It's an expensive job hence alot of examples havent had them done so if you do venture, ask for receipts...

Generally it wouldn't be the starter motor if it cut out though? Has it had problems before mate? I.e starting intermittedley? If so, then probably the starter motor! Also, maybe try and put it in gear, rock it (wait for a click) then try and start it.

Belts are cheaper to do on a 197 IIRC.

Exactly what the Giraffe man said. After driving a 172 from 116k to 126k almost everyday i'll never have any reistance to buy a high mileage Clio.
