Aslong as you've roughed up the surface so the paint will stick, it'll be fine. Then spray a base coat, and flat it back with some 1500 grit, then add coats on top until you get a decent finish

Ah well, unless you get them sandblasted, keep at it! You don't need to take them back to the metal, just aslong as you have a smooth surface to apply a base coat to.
