I also paid a third of that price last year to insure a 172 (I was 20 when the insurance policy started).
You need to shop around big time!! Lower prices will certainly be there to snap up. Just spend a day phoning everyone up.

I think it actually looks pretty much spot on now ive seen it from further back. I need to move it down slightly...
Ill give it a try, see what it looks like. There's 2 holes part way down the recess though, were some springy looking things are, so I cant go too much further down I think.

Update:
I finally sorted my rear plate out. I went for a plain one, but slightly smaller than the size the car was supplied with, but still bang on the legal limit as I understand it. 520mm x 101mm
