Mercury has better chemicals in it, from my experience of both. Makes it easier, rather than "just" scratching the carbon off with the abrasives that both contain.
Where you'll need wire wool with Autosol, you're less likely to need it with Mercury.

Well protected car, SF is useful and CP works wonders.
Poorly protected car, SF really does nothing (unless it's full of APC/Degreaser), but CP manually sprayed can make a world of difference.
This is why Avalanche is interesting. If it doesn't have the same effect as manually spraying CP...
Slightly concerned you're zooming over the car with 3M FCP and a rotary, and yet still use a chamois!
So based on the above and to actually answer your question, I would put my money on you having pre-existing holograms in the paint, that the wet mitt is revealing.
