It's possible, but they have to be the same board - if it's reference design then it can be two different brands/clocks but the layouts have to be the same.

All potentially - the Pentium D shipped with 955X and 975X chipsets of which not all boards could run Core2 chips due to a change in the specifications - even though many of them originally advertised this.
