your teachers network wont work as there are no switches unless he means switches and not patch panels lol then with rings you have trouble with possible duplication of messages so ou need to use spanning tree protocol

fiber is so cheap now most people use it for backbones these days if the run is more than 100 meters there isnt another way (unless you repeat the signal)

in my company if one switch fails that cab is fucked buts thats because they wont let me spend money so i have to do the best i can :( and if the consolodation switch goes we are really fucked !!!!

if you want overkill bet very reiliant then you would have 2 switches in each cab either have one as redundant backup or split the load over 2 but make sure there is capacity in both switches to take all the connections incase one fails

if the cable run is under 100 meters from node to main swich just use 1 if its more then yes thats right for a simple nework but you should run 2 fibers between the switches

by the way 1000Mb/s is gigabit your only really getting overrkill when using 10GbE :)

your waisting resources because you only need 1 switch when you link switches together you only share data at the speed of the port usually 1 gig if you have all your lines going into 1 switch they share data across its internal backbone in the case of that hp switch i mentioned thats 38Gbps!

best design would be if all the nodes are less than 95 meters away from the cabinate is to wire one cable from each node to the cabinate then stick something like a hp procurve 5304xl routing switch in the cabinate that way they can all have gig speeds and be switched using just one device :)

there is no router in room 1 except the one that goes to the net those boxes in room 2 and 3 i cant see been routers as routers are only usually 2 port (each side of the divided network) so they would need to connect to a switch/hub first before a router and there sure as hell isnt 2 boxes in...

anyway i think we both agree he should fail it himself with no aditional help from us :P
