yes Mutant stuff is poor(mind you for £50 you can do little better), however you might have connected them to show an 8 ohm load as opposed to a 2.
I have heard lots of stories about hthe Mutant stuff going pop, bang and crackle! plus they dont like hot weather

i ahve a huge problem My alpine has loads of leads and also the stalk controlls however I found a nice gap to the right of the slot that the RCAs can go down without taking up too much room
the loom has a blue and white wire, you might need to snip it and connect suing a block connector or bullets then heatshrink.
you can then run the cable to the amp through the car. You don't need huge cable as it is only carrying a signal.

I/ve got a RAC one Its great for being lazy however is not so good at doing curves.
TBH I got better results by hand applying then buffing off with the RAC one

you cna get aa roll of brown bread for £100 that will do your whole car ! Boot, doors, floor bulkhead and roof lining if you really want to kill all sound
I just did boot and double layered doors with inner and outer skins deadoned.
if you want nothing in your boot at all get a good headunit, Alpine, Becker Nak et. A good pair of components with a powerful stereo amp will give you lots of mid bass and a great sound
