That little lot with all the disks etc would set you back in the region of £2k. Thank god for limited companies!
And yes, I can build your next computer - for a very reasonable fee I don't mind doing this sort of thing. Couple of notes on top of hardware cost (prefer that you supply it and...
P.S. You're going to lose the X-Fi argument. I've got one, and it lives in the cupboard as I took it out in favour of the Auzentec X-Meridian that I use now. Absolutely amazing card - the components and attention to detail make a phenomenal difference.
It's not a waste of money... It keeps me out of the 182 which means I keep my licence for longer!! Lol
The X-Fi is tosh. They claim how powerful it is, yet it has to 'switch' between games mode, entertainment mode and recording mode, and doesn't manage something as simple as on-the-fly...
Unfortunately, even if the pipes did burst, it's non-conductive fluid in there...
Just pointing out, you don't want to expect it to last years - my rig will be out of date this time next year and underspecced for what I will need it to do in two years...
As for the soundcard, my apologies - I...
Well I figured I ought to put a couple of pics and a spec up as people are probably starting to question where I get my opinions from...
It's made up of the following:
3x120mm fan Radiator, with an Alphacool NexXxoS HP Pro waterblock (hand lapped) and Eheim 600 reservoir/pump in a...
Truesay.
I'm just about to put up a thread on my new machine - ready for people to take a piece out of... Not quite finished as it's being 'borrowed' for software development but will be back and completed in a couple of weeks...
Get Vista. If all of your kit works with it, it's an absolute dream to work with.
However, prepare for hell and reinstalling XP SP2 if you don't do your driver and compatibility homework first...
My money is on 2 at a push if you carry on playing games at the level that will play now...
Intel still haven't let all the Core2 cats out of it's bag, and ATI have to properly take on the 8800 series, and nVidia have yet to respond to their challenge...
Futureproof? Who you kidding - you've got a 2.66 Dual Core...
Not a bad spec PC, but unless you work for PC world then futureproof = support for 16+ cores or at least dual quad core, and a damn site more than a GTS...
Not sure on the exports for 2000. We have 2 SQL2000 databases but they're supported by the software provider. My Altiris database is 2005, so anything I found would be irrelevant - and I'm not brave enough to break a live clinical database from my user account!
Agree with comment you've quoted - what's the point in having xGb of memory if it uses half of it?
I'd rather see all my 4Gb used than have it use a quarter of it and page the rest - it just doesn't make sense!
Has it occurred to you that the A100 is slightly under the 'optimal' spec for Vista?
My SZ2 has a couple of issues with Vista, but it's still very usable and it only has issues when you really push it. (But then, I also know what I'm doing with a computer - read into that what you will)
I...
Most webcams come with motion-activated capture software now, particularly when you go to Logitech and the likes (as long as you don't go for the IM-designed cams - they don't have much bundled software).
Permissions to list contents at a filesharing level. Not sure where it will lie as I've never encountered it but typically you can also get this when you're not all in the same workgroup/domain.
RAID Stripe is where RAID is configured for performance as opposed to redundancy. The big 3 are Mirror (exact duplicate of the data on both disks), Stripe (the data is 'striped' onto the disks increasing theoretical performance) and RAID 5 which is a bit of both - Data is striped on all drives...
Above comment is tosh - Dell laptops are fine for the money and even the fabled ATG with 8-week waiting list is turning up at my desk 5 days after order.
3 down, 23 to go!!
As for the laptop spec, the only real biggie I'd go for is to try and get a Core2 processor in there rather than the...
