I pay around £600 a month for my two cars... 07 Megane GT and my 54 182. If anyone wants to judge just on that then they are obviously not in the right position to be advising you.
Now the interesting bit - I bought both of those from scratch - I've never saved anything up in my life and...
Flash BIOS. I don't think 2800 to 3000 was a major step, so will probably be fixed in the latest BIOS. They don't release them because they feel like it...
I think you're all on the wrong idea. Are you going to be running a HD TV yeah?
Get any old dualhead card - most modern PCIe cards are, and many AGP cards too.
Is it even that much? The Dell's are fairly easy to change the HDDs on, although I'd be weary of sticking a 7200 in place of a 4200 - noise will be more and more significantly battery life will be adversely affected - which on an ultraportable is important. Perhaps try a 5400rpm? It's a fair...
Battery life on the P4 Laptops sucked at the best of times... I dread to imagine how bad a 2.8Ghz one was? And how hot it makes your crotch/coffee table?!
Not a chance in hell. My main computer is only just over a year old and is well out of date technologically, and will need upgrading in the next few months. It was £1500 when I built it...
Wasted money on a Quad core unless you know your applications are written to use it. Most applications are still only single threaded or at most two, so having four cores is pointless.
Spend the money on a decent graphics card in a dual core machine. You'll NEVER max out two 2.4Ghz cores on...
Screen on this Dell is 1920x1200, and it's got nVidia Quadro graphics built in and lasts an absolute age on batteries (I'm going to be ordering a PCI-Ex minicard for my T-Mobile data account and the CD/DVD slot second battery for it just to finish the job off, as it's fantastic).
I love my SZ...
I've warmed to Dell laptops - I've got a VAIO SZ2 and love it - would go out and buy an SZ4 tomorrow if this died, but I have to say the decision is becoming more difficult every time I use my mum's development laptop (Dell Precision M65, with the upgraded screen - you can get 4 reasonable size...
As for desktops - they're Ok but if you're doing media on it then get a laptop... It's only a rare occasion but it's great to be able to stick it under the TV to put a film on, rather than have to either haul the whole base unit downstairs, or convert it and burn it to DVD or whatever...
AMD...
Laptops are just as simple. I dismantle them at work when I'm bored, and changed the screens over on Latitude C640s, Removed processors and replaced fans on D610s...
Current recommendation is an Inspiron 6400:
Components
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5300 Processor (1.73GHz,533MHz,2MB L2 cache)...
Possible that AHCI is enabled if you're using an SATA drive and this would make it inaccessible by Windows setup without the AHCI driver disk for the controller.
Another point worth noting is when you compare it to a lot of the cheaper units on the market, they are purely streaming devices. The AppleTV has the disk so that only some of the content needs to be streamed (if any at all!) so you don't have to go upstairs and turn the computer on and then...
I've got one, and it's absolutely fantastic for the money. The only reviews I can find on the internet slating it are from jumped up idiots who bought it wanting it to do something which it doesn't say it can do.
As a way of watching all my videos and pictures, and listening to my music...
Have a look on HP's website for a Turion-based Laptop running XP and try the drivers for that - that's your best bet. If it was an Intel-based machine I'd have suggested the drivers from there. Also make sure you're using SP2 on XP, as you'll usually get most onboard audio drivers from Windows...
If she's getting that message when the other accounts are disabled, it's either a random message from a buggered OS, or she's got file sharing set up and people have drives mapped which will also cause that message.
May be other instances but as long as the only account that is enabled is hers...
