A new i7 MBP will be a huge improvement over your old c2d imac in terms of performance. Whether you need that is entirely up to you.

Them mods are a weekends worth of work, and its only that long because you have to let the paint dry!
Just wait until your ready to insure it, then buy one.
DCi 80/100 is a good shout, if not then go for the 1.4 16V imo.
Either:
Buy a car now that needs work, use the time you have before your 17 to bring it up to a good unmodified standard
or
Wait until you need the car and buy one then, prices will have dropped slightly by then
