I still think you should try a macbook. Worth it for the trackpad alone, you wont actually believe how you lived without the trackpad, its pinpoint accurate and the gestures make everything you do on the computer so much simpler. Have you considered second hand? ;)

I have a 1000d in my hands right now and can 100% guarantee it has live view. You have to enable it in the menu and then it is activated using the set button

The screen alone is worth going for the 550D over the 1000D, nevermind the quicker fps, better high iso performance etc

The slip ring/angle sensor (the spinny thing behind the wheel) must be correctly set. If you moved it 360 degrees either way then it would present the traction control light like you say, after a short while. Needs setting back to centre which is a case of removing the wheel and turning it all...
