This is a common fault. You need to cut the connector blocks out and solder the wires together directly. All of the moving backwards and forwards that the seat does, the connection goes bad/breaks and causes the warning light. Even for a novice it's an hours work tops.

Soak it in acid, leave it for 10 minutes then go at it with a Brillo pad. Wear rubber gloves!! You will get it off, it just takes time and patience.

BMW diesels of that era love to s**t their timing chains so check it's had any necessary work done. New tensioner/chain etc.

When I went to town on it, I polished it with G1, SRP and then waxed it with Zymol Carbon. Looked f**king awesome. If you're not one for much cleaning though, I recommend polishing it with the DA and then give it a good coat of Hydr02. Makes car washing for the next 6 months a piece of piss!
