Of to the left side on the grass next to where most people where stood on the concrete. Started of with a canon 70-200 which was to short apart from pans past the camera and then used my sigma 70-300, no tripod though.

I would just clean it up the best you can with the degreaser, and lightly use metal polish on it.

Autoglym Engine and Machine Cleaner or Meguiars All Purpose cleaner have always worked for me, never resorted to steam cleaning or pressure washing here. What bits are you trying to polish, things that all ready are polished or polish things up that are unpolished and a raw finished? I use...

Use as little water as you need to remover the degreaser, work in small areas at a time, drying each bit as you go along, rather than spraying degreaser and water over the whole engine.

Welcome to CS, Not a 106 but changed from 306 XSi and 205 GTi one. No regrets here.

If claying with QD it is best to dry the panel first to avoid watering down the QD to much so its not as slick and wont do it's job. I clay using soap and water so never bother to dry.
