Also, anyone have one of these spare, passenger side, mondial blue?

172 C.U.P. (Complete and Utter Poo)

The original clips are really difficult to release. I used pliers designed for electrical connectors, and just released the tension in the clips and gradually wiggled them off. A bit of silicon spray under the original hose helped. The main issue is, if you’re replacing with silicon hoses...

Arse! Literally I do something carefully and I mess it up. I’ll rectify this asap. Thanks for calling it out.

172 C.U.P. (Complete and Utter Poo)

I also replaced the bonnet release, and used new stainless fittings where appropriate. Just trying to neaten it up and extend its life properly! Looks at the state of that rad. The condenser had dragged through it and was hanging completely out of place. No wonder it lost the gas…

172 C.U.P. (Complete and Utter Poo)

Ok, so a bit more detail: Replaced all coolant hoses with MTC silicon hoses and stainless hi grip clamps. The two narrow bore hoses that link to the heater are poorly specified vs factory hoses as they T pieces that connect them are too long. Took off enough from each to make them fit properly...

172 C.U.P. (Complete and Utter Poo)

Major progress (to me at least). The engine bay looks so much better. As ever a few challenges so I’ll post later with a couple of questions, grateful for any help CS peeps. For now, how much better does this look- fresh coolant bottle, hoses, a radiator that’s a rectangle? Brilliant!

    Coolant hoses - 172 cup

Thanks Matt- yep, looks that way. I’ve cut them down and will see tomorrow.

    Coolant hoses - 172 cup

Think I found the answer back in the annals of CS- basically the hoses are not a good fit and need to be cut down. Not what you would expect for an expensive purchase described as an upgrade! I’ve cut mine down to narrow the distance between them by about 2”, will see how they fit tomorrow.

    Coolant hoses - 172 cup

I need the help of the CS massive… doing a rad, a/c condenser and hoses refresh. It’s the usual b****cks of rusted fasteners and whatnot but I’m nearly there. I think the only two hoses I have left to swap over are the ones that go back to the heater matrix. But the silicon upgrades seem to have...

    Detailing Chat & Questions Thread

Thanks for the advice. It’s the foam pad that came with the spta. It’s a cordless one and I’m using it on a low speed.

SPTA rotary, 4 dots on a foam pad. Probably 4 passes. I’m new to this so sooner be careful than completely messing up. Thanks!

    Detailing Chat & Questions Thread

Thanks Nostrils, that worked and all good. I used some farecla G3 and it doesn’t look to have reduced the scratches at all. Any tips people? Before I let loose on the precious concours Clio.

    Detailing Chat & Questions Thread

Claybar question. I’m trying to do a decent clean on the MX5 and the Clio. First time claying either car. Is this looking ok? I’ve used meguiars shampoo and a meguiars spray that came with the clay- when I clay a panel, keeping the clay lubricated, it looks like there’s some kind of...

172 C.U.P. (Complete and Utter Poo)

Working on it @ChrisP_182 - it has been really neglected and mistreated. A shocker. I keep meaning to write up the little bits of progress, still didn’t get around to doing the hoses, rad and a/c but hopefully soon. I DO need a small bodywork piece- there’s a painted strip above the rear side...

    My cheap(ish) 172 Cup

I’ve got the rad, aircon condenser thing and hoses to go in this week… all going well (which it doesn’t).

    Rear side window seal leaking

Thanks, one more thing to do! You can see that the seal has failed- the old black rubber is frilly now where it’s been distorted by the sun.

    Rear side window seal leaking

Just that- the seal around my rear side window has been sun damaged and is now leaking… can you get replacements or do I reseal the glass? I thought it used sealant as well as a separate rubber piece. Thanks

I’d also tried Gtechniq trim restorer, slight improvement but still like one of those old white dog poos.

    My cheap(ish) 172 Cup

    BMW N54 cooling system

Wasn’t sure where to post this… anyone have experience working on the f**king shitshow that is the N54 cooling system? My Alpina B3S had a slight leak from the waterpump. No surprise there. At 140k miles I decided to replace as many hoses as I could, and the expansion tank. All good. Got the...

    Radiator- good/bad

Thanks- yeah they organised a replacement when they saw the picture, just a shame to trash it! I was getting itchy because there are none in stock and my patience is wearing thin to get the work all done! Cheers.

    Radiator- good/bad

I received this Nissans rad- bashed up by DPD. I filled it with water and it didn’t leak- but unpressurised of course. The tubes themselves look like they must have been bent- so is it an absolute no go? I don’t want to fit it and then find it’s bad? Are they really fragile?

    Mondial 172 Cup OEM+ / Rolling Resto

Between weather, kids, rust, surprise old bodges and general stuff, things much less impressive than what you’re doing always take me 3 x the imagined time. Usually that means into a second or third day for me. What a pain in the arse! Good luck next time.

Doing driveshafts, dampers and springs- what else?

Yeah, it quite quickly becomes that, doesn’t it. I’m working on two other cars at the same time so it may be this for now and then a refurbed subframe, wishbones etc etc in a year or two.

Doing driveshafts, dampers and springs- what else?

Basically that. I’m about to put fresh cup dampers on my 172 Cup, cooksport springs and both driveshafts. What else is an obvious job/change to do on a weary Cup while these bits are being done? Will change the gearbox oil, obvs. Any bushes? Thanks.
