Sophos is great in the work (aka - paid for) environment. For free home use, AVG-Free is pretty good. Just be sure to read carefully what tick boxes you have on when you install it. Seems overtly paranoid with its scans and slows the PC down a fair bit...

Ads, what graphics card have you got? I haven't read all this thread, so apologies if its been said already. If the fan on the gfx card is hardly moving (or dead?), it will trigger a thermal shutdown similar to the one on the CPUs. Doesn't normally do it as quick as what you mention though...

Are you running a legit installation of Windows? Have you installed any Windows Updates recently? The first update is usually a combo of the latest Windows installation utility and the Genuine Advantage tool (aka Bill's Spyware). D.

Moz - did the same on my Amiga m8, similar price too, iirc. But it was a whole lot easier to fit. Flip the Amiga over, unclip the centre 'hatch' and clip the memory board in. Worked a treat. Quite a few games got 'boosted' by the 1MB onboard. F-18 Interceptor played the intro music and ones like...
