The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Although our cameras weren't running at Thruxton this footage from onboard Jon Lannon's feisty Saxo pretty much captures the whole of my stint.

Do I need stiffer springs? :D

Do you run a rear anti roll bar? This will help to some extent for the front too as it will help to reduce the amount of lateral weight transfer. You’ll notice a significant improvement in the way the car behaves too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Thruxton 2nd May Saturday morning began with packing the van before hitching up the trailer and loading the car. Feels like an age since I last did this! I set of for the 2.5hour drive at about 11.30 with a planned stop in to see my parents on the way before arriving at the track at about 3pm...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Well, after a couple of late nights she's about ready. The screen went in yesterday evening and then it was just a case of fitting the new Lexan windows to the doors and hanging them, followed by applying the new Livery. The doors could benefit from a little more adjustment but they'll do for...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Early start today and before doing anything else I test fitted an offcut of vinyl to make sure it would take to the roof. All seemed ok.. So with help from the wife we went about wrapping the roof and had it all done in about an hour or so. I have to say it has come out just as I wanted it and...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Have you not been following @RuskiWeldShit ? Ilya and I have been discussing the roof for some time. Sadly, he beat me to it by about 3 weeks but he's slowly making his whole car out of Carbon Kevlar. He is a crazy Russian though and I can't compete with that!

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Thursday I freed up some time to crack on with the roof and before lunch I had the steel roof off the car. Oddly a harder job for having welded this one on myself a few years ago. Welds don't drill out as easily as spot welds but it was nothing an angle grinder couldn't handle. More surprisingly...

28000 172 cup - nearly ready for cam belts

FYI a cambelt change isn't normally an engine out job but if you are taking it out I'd suggest doing the engine and gearbox mounts. Sat for so long they'll probably shake themselves to bits as soon as you start using it anyway.

So, roof has demoulded ok and I'm glad to say that at 2.6kg I should go a little faster! The surface looks a little bumpy in places but I think there's enough resin over it so that it can flatted with a sand and then it will be ready to be wrapped. Also spent Sunday wrapping the 2...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Finally made a start on the roof! After one final round of cutting, polishing and filling the holes yesterday, this morning I started by applying 3 coats of release wax to the roof before sheeting the car up. Once this was done I applied some filleting wax to the tight return on the edge of...

    Starting Issue...

Have you checked all the know corrosion points, like the white plug in the fuse box? Can’t get your link to work so can’t see what it’s doing. Other obvious possibility is old fuel or bad injector. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Interesting cams?

I think the Maxi used an F7R engine but I’m not sure if the head was different. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Last night I "de-sponsored" the car ready for my own company sponsor livery to go on. And today my new rods arrived from Pure Motorsport which, along with a new set of JE pistons that arrived from the States last week can now go off with the rest of my new bottom end to be dynamically balanced...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

It's a solid piece of kit to be honest. It locks out at 2 heights and once locked there's no way it's going to come down and the car is rock solid on it. One reason for buying this was the ability of taking it to the track. I should just about be able to fit it in with all my gear. Also, until I...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

So Brakes are all on. 15" Ultraleggeras fit with room to spare over them which is a relief! Only hitch is the brake lines are not long enough so I've had to order a new set. In other news, the screen is now out ready to mould the new roof and I've also had a chance to try out the new...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Yes, update overdue! The other door went on fine with a set of hinges I found on EBay and the brakes finally arrived last week. Windows not fitted yet as I'm about to mould the carbon roof which is priority before our first race at Thruxton 2nd May. Windscreen comes out next week and once all...

    Lightweight crank pulley

I've been running a lightweight pulley on my race engine for the past 3 years but that is along with a bottom end that's been dynamically balanced complete with clutch and flywheel. It also allows me to run lightweight pulleys on everything else so I'd hope the overall drag on the engine is...

172 Discs for track day car

I've been using Brembo HC discs and CL pads for the last 5 or 6 years of racing. They get hot under race conditions yes, but never had any significant fade or long pedal in the 40 minute races we do. This photo shows how hot they get but they still work. Only this year am I upgrading to a custom...

Yep, sometimes the edge of the pad needs filing a bit. Make sure the calliper is super clean and rust free on the sliding surface too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Another step in the right direction today with the gearbox now back from Mark Fish and Hubs newly powder coated and new bearings pressed in. The weather is supposed to start warming up tomorrow, so once I'm done with all the Valentines stuff I should be able to start getting the car back...

I'm not sure if I've got a blank one, a mate of mine does these for me but I'll have a look through all the files and see if there is one. I'll message you if I have one.

Right, I think I'm committed to doing the roof now. Ordered all the materials which arrived today and started stripping the vinyl from the roof ready for polishing. Material is a 2X2 3K carbon fibre mat, 210gsm weight. This will be layered in 3 sheets each layered at 90 degrees to each other but...

    15 vs 17 wheels on 182 for track/race

Bets bet is the Ultras in 16" in my opinion. They do look good in that size.

    15 vs 17 wheels on 182 for track/race

Pretty much the lightest wheel and tyre package you will find for a Clio is a set of OZ Ultraleggeras in 15” with 195/50 tyres. Superleggeras are lighter but they don’t make them anymore. So only 2nd hand and very rare. I wouldn’t even consider a 17” wheel. All Clio racers run 15” and a few run...
