Before having a car without it I would say gimmick, but now see it as a good tool if you do alot off motorway driving, but with a 172 you should really take the B roads home anyway!

Yeah the car has to belong to and and be insured by someone else.
Your policy will say something to the efffect of any 3rd party on any other vehicle not in your name with the owners permission.
I ended up starting a new policy a few years ago when I got another car to use as a run about.
Some companies mirror your NCB so you can use it on two cars, I think HIC do this.
Some will insure both cars some how under the same policy if one is on limited mileage.
Some will do neither...

I have never had the chance to drive a 172 Cup, but my 182 with Cup suspension feels better...

Welcome to CS. Biggest choice weather to go the Cup or normal car is do you want, need or will miss the toys.
Coming from the 6 if you want to keep your leather/alcantara and aircon a full fat 172/182 is the way to go.
Easyist way to see this light is when you turn the ignition on and most off the dash lights come on.
When it comes on for real its just there to say change now or you will hit the limiter!
Heating it up will soften the adhesive. You should then ba able to get under it. As stated a stanley blade will be ideal, just be carefull off the heated screen lines. Any residue left behind will come off easily with Autoglym Tar remover, lighter fluid or white spirit.
