    its 100% NOT headgasket, that (believe it or not) is infact 100% normal for the 1.2 16V engine, its due to the plastic rocker cover nothing to worry about

    i've only ever seen one 172 with a dead rocker in 6years as i said, get your arse over to Bicester and Neil will sort it best spending £50 in fuel for a pro diagnostic rater than £1K for a potentially pointless engine swap

    well you need to take the entire dash out, suctle pannels out, etc etc etc at a guess at least 10hours (dash and wiring is the hard part) pointless and makes your car much slower
