Theres plenty of things you can use for a 'longer pole'. Put the wheel brace on, then extend it using the handle from your trolley jack. Go down the road and find some scaffolding. I use an old piece of table. Sounds bizzare but I found it in the garage and its perfect! Been using it years.

Sadly not a lot you can do with punctures. Its a really hit and miss situation.
