gearboxes on the mk1's are crap and do fail
rememeber the cambelt is big money (use that to negotiate)
£16K is over priced really, thats mk2 money

nohing major to look for really, accident damage is the main one
check the brakes have loads of life left in them as they're not cheap to replace
same with tyres
coil packs go tits up
check how many previous owners its had etc etc, if the bloke selling it is even slightly...
