my advice is dont buy one....wait until the PS3 comes out, the 360 will tumble in price. the games arent really next generation at the moment just slightly better looking versions of whats currently on offer on the xbox. Cerainly wouldnt pay 1 bean over the RRP.

i found out that the house does have a BT line, so pressumably you have to pay the minimum monthly payment to BT and they pay a broadband provider to do your calls + brodband combined?

Yes because there is a noticible difference in quality between a DVD to VHS or a CD to a grammarphone, i wouldnt say that about the Xbox 360 and the xbox.
