Rub a little bit of engine oil around the bottom o-rings. I've had my fuel rail off a few times. I set it on and line the injectors up and the push down directly on top of each injector. You can see the injector move down slightly as it seats properly. Using the bolts to pull the injectors...
I would also investigate more into the ignition side of things. An ignition component breaking down and allowing unburnt fuel into the exhaust could be the problem. The fact that your CAT is possibly damaged could be the result of the problem and not the problem itself.
