Welcome to the world of cars.
Go for whatever is the cheapest to insure and then stick with it for a coupler of years and don't go trying to "improve" it eitgher, as you'll either increase your premium or invalidate your policy (depending on if you declare said "improvements").
Foot the bill...
Companies only accept full-year bonuses. 50% of 1 year will get you 0% discount.
Honestly, you should try to swallow the insurance costs for going alone. I did from day 1. £1500 for an entry-level Diesel Corsa wasn't fun, but it stopped me making the car worse with ghey "modz" as I needed to be...
OK,
1) VW Fox > Clio (flame suit engaged)
It'll be built somewhat better and although it doesn't have "twistiez power", it will be a good first car for learning in (even when you pass, you're still learning...in fact, every day you drive, you learn something)

In any case, it's better...

I was expecting clouds of inner-edge smoke and to be pointing at the wall several times.
Pah

Nice vehicle, but the wheels looke completly out of place, if you can get some original Campus alloys on there it will be easier on your insurance (cheaper to re-shoe as well!) and it wont look....odd.
Are those red-sprayed calipers!?! :nono:
I always used Goodyear F1's on mine, but you're running the original 14's aren't you?
Looking at the picture of your interior (feat. roof), I'd imagine it's coming in over your windows. Mine looked very similar then during the winter I made the error of dropping the roof when it was cold and...
Some suggestions for todo list:-
-Headlight restoration
- Lamin-X foglight film (yellow)
-Clear side repeators
-Bosch Aero wipers
-Spray few interior parts (blue)
-Color coded side strips/door handles
That's just saved yo ua big chunk of money, keeps insurance down and keeps resale potential up!
Vinyl is alright, but if you want your roof down in the winter (you will), you'll just end up cracking it.
MOhair is easy to keep clean too, a horse-hair clothes brush sorts everything out.
As for the rear screen, true point that the glass ones dont go well with some roll bars (Mad Dog ones...
