To answer your question though, i guess if as a driver you actually make regular use of it (i.e. your driving is such that it is kicking in all the time) then yeah, it would make you a worse driver, as it allows you to get away with it.

No, I certainly dont anyway. Its a nice safety net to have but its not idiot proof and you can quite easily still get in a mess if you just floor it. Only time i ever get it slightly kicking in on the road is very occasionally pulling away out of a junction with lots of lock on in...
The ride is not hard at all in that respect, infact its the opposite. The suspension is very firm, but the Sachs dampers absorb the bumps very very well, so it feels very smooth on the road. So you basically have the handling benefits of say running coilovers, but without the harsher ride...
Driving wise I didnt find much of a difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 172s (but found the 182 quite different).
Looks wise its personal taste really. I like bits of both but prefer the Mk2 overall, mainly down to the interior, rear bumper & lights clusters.
A Mk1.5 seems a popular choice...
Just thought about this, you might have a flat spot on your tyres where its worn more than the rest of the tyre when they locked up during the braking test section at the airfield day.
