I have to disagree with Kev's suggestions. I think the results from those items over the results from SRP with a decent sealent will be minimal if not to a lesser degree. I also don't think you should be looking at the polish bond product as for a newbie this is really unecessary...
Callum, going straight to a rotary is not a good solution.
As said in PM a while back, you need to go and see someone like PaulB, Alan or Ali. Someone near you that knows what they are doing with the PC.

Sonus pads are good for the DAs; I found them to be hard wearing and last well. Their cut is not as ferocious as the LLC/Menz and 3M products and therefore are good starters.
The Menz products are tip top. However, I do still have some of the easy to learn Meguirars...
Megs quick clay is light and perfectly adequate for use on most daily cars. Over spray etc will not get touched, but people buy specifically for that.
Kit will last you a decent couple of times, but again, how long is a piece of string. If the car is covered in fall out or tar, it will not be...
