Exactly this. The chances of someone at a junction seeing you are increased a million percent when you have you headlights on. I don't want someone careering into the side of me so i've always done it.

Yeah but the way to protect it is cleaning it. Stuff left on the surface is the damaging part. You only need to clean it and leave it.
