Is there any play in the top steerin column bearing? Try lifting the wheel up and dow and you will feel it. If so then it may be the top ball bearing assembly disintigrating.
Could be clutch drag, but also check out 1st gear syncro, if its worn you will get this. You would not experience in other gears because the syncro hubs are doing their stuff. Take it back buddy at tell 'em to fix it.
I got this sorted by Bexhill Gearboxes under warranty. It was caused by a detent ball not functioning on a gear shaft, took them two goes to find it, cos it all worked ok on the bench. Give them a call they were really helpful.
I have had the frequent problem of Airbag and serv warning light on. :(
The problem is caused by high contact resistance/ open circuit in the connector with a brown wire and blue wire installed, located under the passenger seat. This is for the seatbelt pre tensioner, I understand.

Got a 2001 172, full history with 28K.
When changing from 5th to 4th it is possible to take the gear lever across the neutral position and into what seems like a 6th gear position, but the box is only 5 speed.
Only had the car a week and it drives like a dream, except for this quirk. No...
Thanks for your help guys. I carried on looking and found a 2001 Black model with FSH and only 27000 miles. P{ersuaded the seller to change the cambelt and take my Alfa Spider in p/x. Drives great, no crunching and makes the spider feel like a pram.
Looking to buy a 172 (Y reg) with 61K. and note that cambelt needs changing. Any ideas on how much this costs? Also it crunched slightly going from 2nd to 3rd at full chat, is this normal or expensive to fix.?
