The coil feeds the distributor or equivalent in a 172 that in turn feeds the spark plugs. If the coil is breaking down u would get weak sparks resulting in a missfire.

Yep, gear change light is on normal 172!!! I only found out about it after reading this site. At first I thought it was a neutral light, the same as on a bike (doh!!!!). Not sure whether imports have an alarm. Just thought it was a cat 2 immobiliser. Ill have to try the above!!

VR6man, u say the noise is coming from the corners of your car. It might be something to do with one of your suspension struts or a flexing bush. Not sure how you could prove it though.
