speed wise it defo goes mk1 (cause ther so light) mk2 mk3 mk4 in gti engines
the g60 rally will prolly be the quickest mk2 unless its specialy built with audi turbo or vr6 engine
standard the v6r is quicker than the 16v mk2 but it is alot bigger r32 is obviously the quickest

and if you are talking speed, my 16v 1.8 is so much quicker than the mk3 2.0 8v you wouldnt believe. and quicker than the same engine in the mk4 my bros mk1 golf is as fast as my 16v and thats an 8v so the 16v mk1 would b sh*t hot.
the thing is Golfs have aged gracefully, you just dont see so...
Im sorry but Ive been in a Mk1 and a Mk2 GTi.
1. They both had too much body roll and not enough grip.
2. The MK1 didnt have a trip computer, in the way I would imagine a trip computer.
3. They were pig slow!
4. The Mk2 had sh*tty seats!

teady 172 if indeed it was a gti then it had a trip computer otherwise it wasnt a gti they sit in between the speedo and rev counter and display the time when not in use.

lol look at the mk1 golf tho gti 8v has trip computer calculating mpg outside temp oil temp average milage average speed and a few other settings plus a mpg indicator in the dash.
i think thats pretty pioneering for a car of its class
and the mk2 has all that plus leccy leather recaros leccy...
this is the dash i have just fitted into my mk2 jetta you cant say its square and boring and compared to my mk2 dash its the balls, i have mine lower than that tho.

at the end of the day vws are renound for being very reliable for an old car (mk2 and mk1 etc), but the later models arnt holding up so much...
