teady 172 if indeed it was a gti then it had a trip computer otherwise it wasnt a gti they sit in between the speedo and rev counter and display the time when not in use.
also if indeed it did have too much body roll i again state these are old cars if it had standard old suspension on of course its gonna roll thats what happens to old suspension, stick new suspension on and youll be hard pressed to tell the difference between ures and the golf.
my frind has an 8v with coilovers im not saying there isnt a car that can beat it, but i have yet to see one round the bends 70 mh found a very sharp corners was very scary.
tell you what there is a track day at donnington park not next sunday the sunday after, book yourselves on track and lets have us a little race, my frind in his 8v and my other frind in his jetta mk2 vr6 250 bhp and see who wins seriously tho you cant compare your car to the old ones cause they are old spend a little money on them and get them to the same spec then you can do a fair comparison
it must mean something that every influential magazine and tv program and car spods voted the vw golf the best hatchback ever scince its release every year. im not sure if its mk1 or mk 2 tho.
Renualt make better hot hatches, VW lost the plot, everyone knows this. The R32 is an attempt to put things right and is an excellent car (best ever VW). Williams is the best hot hatch EVER!! No golf of any generation can compare.
172 may be cheaper but is a lot better value for money. Golfs are greatly over priced, they are nolonger as reliable as they used to be, Japaness cars hold this rep now.
French cars may not be as reliable in most cases as German cars but they dont cost as much to fix either. Lets face it, old people and rich spoilt kids buy golfs people who want performance and fun go with clios.

Im sorry but Ive been in a Mk1 and a Mk2 GTi.
1. They both had too much body roll and not enough grip.
2. The MK1 didnt have a trip computer, in the way I would imagine a trip computer.
3. They were pig slow!
4. The Mk2 had sh*tty seats!
again im gonna have to comment on this post (in my typo wridden style) i mentioned about the suspension but again ive been in two 205s they were nails i thought they were gonna roll over and breaks were they even fitted? and rust ivenever seen so much on a car!!
but that would be unfair as the two i have been in were owned by the same girl and bought for no more than £200 each at action i realise that not every 205 is like this and it would be silly of me to think so.
and with the seats have you seen the leather recaro seats mk2 items? im sure you wouldnt complaine if you did.
thats quite interesting cause when jezza clarkson raced what looked like a Mk2 against what looked like a mk4, the mk2 whooped ass!

and if you are talking speed, my 16v 1.8 is so much quicker than the mk3 2.0 8v you wouldnt believe. and quicker than the same engine in the mk4 my bros mk1 golf is as fast as my 16v and thats an 8v so the 16v mk1 would b sh*t hot.
the thing is Golfs have aged gracefully, you just dont see so many lastning models of the old pugs except specialities like the willioms (which i admittedly do love)
obviously were never all gonna agree but spoilt rich kids hehe ok
and about the clio being the best got hatch check it out, mk1 or 2 (depending which one) beats the williams in people vost in mags and such.

speed wise it defo goes mk1 (cause ther so light) mk2 mk3 mk4 in gti engines
the g60 rally will prolly be the quickest mk2 unless its specialy built with audi turbo or vr6 engine
standard the v6r is quicker than the 16v mk2 but it is alot bigger r32 is obviously the quickest
to give you an example my 16v jetta should do 0-60 in 7-8 secs and has 138 bhp standard the mk1 16v will be the same in a lighter car.
the mk3 and mk4 gtis went wrong cause it hardly had any more power and it was like twice as heavy

The Mk1 Golf is (IMO) lovely to look at.
I think everyone you talk to will have a different idea of what the best hot-hatch of all time is. Pug owners will argue the merits of the 205 and 306 GTis, Renault owners will badge up the R5GTT, clio valver and williams, VAG (hehe, stupid acronym that) will scream about the golf.
