1.2 16V Extreme - Cold start problem

Hi folks,

Just registered so bare with me.

I'm part of the VW scene, so I'm not all clue'd up on the Clio.

My mums 1.2 16V Extreme (pretty sure thats the model name) won't start first, second, sometimes third time from a cold start such as first thing in the morning or when finished work at night.

After a few tries with no life in the car what so ever, it will evetually start and run perfectly fine. The only problem is the initial start from cold.

Are there any common faults that cause this problem, anything I can visually check or any specialist software which I should get the car scanned with?

Don't want to spend silly money paying someone to do something trivial that I could easily do. So thats where all you chaps come in.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Ross.;)

When you say it won't start first, second, third times, I assume you just mean it cranks and cranks but doesn't fire?

If thats the case firstly I'd either take off the TDC sensor and clean it, tighten the terminals and try that (as its family), or replace the TDC sensor.

Could be a few other little things but TDC sensor is very common on Renault starting issues. Chances are if its coolant temp sensor it'd start and just cough splutter or rev hard anyway.

Yes mate, it just won't fire. After a few times though it starts no problem.

Where abouts can I find the TDC, anyone know? Might give this a go cleaning it and see if it helps.

Cheers for the reply TomTom

i have just had the same symtoms as u and it was the flywheel sensor. best bet is to get a scanner on it. part costs around £60 from renault and usually bout £85 fitted. small sensor on the right hand side of the engine on the bottom end. can be seen from top

Some garages wont charge you to pop it on a diagnostic machine...can be alot cheaper
that spending money on thing that you think it might be.
