1.2 16v wearing thin (SSLLOOOWWW)

Hi,

Ive only ever had this car, 1.2 16v mk2 ph2 got it new when I started driving.
Ive never driven anything else never driven my parents cars or courtesy cars etc.
I am getting sick of the speed.
Im doing alot of miles to work now 80 a day to be exact and the clio is returning 45-48 mpg. around town it does 55 mpg but as soon as I go on the motorway the engine drinks it a gallon per gulp! and if i really push it doing 85-90mph I can get as low as 35mpg.

The problem Im having is I wouldnt mind getting say 35mpg if I was getting the performance, the whole revving the arse off the engine is wearing a bit thin.

Plus insurance is getting cheaper.
Its £500 on this car but ive had quotes for £800 for a 182 fully comp.

I think a bigger engined car is going to get bought.
Do renault dealers have a UK wide search (I know ford dealers used to) so that they can find me a 182, test drive it and see what I think.

How much is a 182 say 2004-2005 with lowish miles going to cost me.

also what is my car worth as a trade in, 2002 1.2 16v mk2ph2 dynamique with 94k on it. It has been in a rear shunt a few years ago, it was repaired fairly well professionally but since its been in an accident I think its gonna be hard to sell plus with the high miles

if you look you could get a 182 to around say £8000 upwards

Reason why the 1.2 isnt returning good mpg on the motorway because at 90mph you are doing a billion revs.
Your cars probably worth £2200. Im not sure a 182 is the answer in terms of fuel economy, should sort the performance out though.

Yeah I know its gonna cost me a bit to run.
I should really buy a diesel the amount of miles i'm doing but what im saying is I dont mind paying more if im getting more power.

Im just getting sick of constantly changing down, even when in the right gear there is no acceleration when going up VERY steep hills.
There is no acceleration in 5th, whatever speed you are going when you put it into 5th thats the limit!

Its just because im a bit older now and have more options but im getting itchy feet lol

doing 80 miles a day you will get about 30-35 mpg on the motorway less in town, it will be a massive shock, get a cheap deisel and get a 182 for weekends

Thats quite good mpg id say, i get roughly 35mpg form my 1.2 16v. Is your 1.2 a cat d?or was in not that bad a hit? if it was a cat d id say you would really struggle to get £2k

if you get 35 out of a 1.2 there is either something wrong with it or your driving the balls off it 24/7

runs perfectly fine, usually the computer always averages out at 34.3 or 34.4, how do i do a proper test?

No i actually drive it very carefully considering its a 1.2, but i do ALOT of very short trips, maybe thats why? oh and i am relying on the trip computer!!i have never bothered working it out, but i do roughly 100 miles on a tenner.

i get 200-250 to £40 of petrol.

your cars probably worth £2,000 if your lucky, if its not a catd

i payed £1700 for mine in 2005 (2002 Clio 1.2 16v 115k miles with full service history, 1 owner)

Fill the car to the brim (untill the nozzle cuts out), reset the trip distance and then drive the car till some or all of the fuel is gone. Go fill it back up again (till the nozzle cuts out) and divide the amount of fuel you put back in by what it cost you to fill up the 2nd time. You'll have to convert litres in to gallons though, there are plenty of site that do this for you. You'll probably get 2.5 gallons(ish) for a tenner. This would easily mean you're getting more than 40MPG! 1 gallon = 4.54 litres!

Im not sure if it is a Cat D or not. How do I tell? run a HPI on it?
If it isnt a CAT D should I just keep my mouth shut about the accident if at a dealers?

  Shhh
Dont buy a 172/182/trophy..

They are slow, rattly, bumpy, expensive to run, renault are crap..

But, they sometimes do outsine other cars now and then, not many though..

172/182' can be fairly economical on the motoway. My missus took mine to Newcastle and back and averaged 41mpg. She regularly gets 32mpg out of mine if we swop cars for a week or two.

My average is normally in the low 20's though, sometimes as low as 15mpg. After reading your post it doesn't sound like you will be driving slow everywhere so you ain't gonna be saving on fuel. I'm also beginning to wish I'd got a cup instead as my MOT is up this month and my xenons have just stopped working. Got new bulbs but if it ain't them I think its going to be expensive.

my D will do 60mpg all day long @ 65/70, 50mpg @ 80/90 :)

and it's group 3 insurance, but matches a 1.6 16V petrol in performance
(same 110bhp, but nearly double the torque)

What model is that? 2.0 Diesel?

  • I think mines quite fast, depends what you're used to
  • I have no rattles in mine, although it's not the greatest build quality
  • Bumpy?
  • I consider mine to be quite economical for a 2.0l with 172-ish horses.
I think some people forget what a Clio actually is. Is a lower-end, cheap, fun hatchback. If you want something faster, with less rattles go buy something like a Golf, but expect to pay disproportionately higher figure.

I LOVE my 172, but maybe I'm not over-expectant of what a cheap car should be.

i reckon this lad needs a 100bhp dieel clio imo. will be quicker than the 1.2 and more economical.

buy a 197 if you want 26mpg lol thats what i get, well actually i lie, currently doing 20.5 mpg... but last tankful i got 27.5mpg! i am pleased if i get over 28mpg.

get a 182/172 if you want cheap running costs and speed. if you want s**t mpg and speed buy a 197. lol

182/172 are muchos fun and hopefully you'll be happy with it! :) if the mpg is an issue don't bother with one as i only ever managed normally about 31 - 33 mpg in my 182. if i drove at 60mph i'd get 39mpg or near abouts.

I have gone from a 1.2 dynamique on a 52 plate to a 03 plate 172. My 172 does about 35mpg on an average day, my little 1.2 used to about 50mpg . But if you bought a 1.2 in the first place then you werent looking for speed, they are a good car and are quick compared to other 1.2's.

  172
Same with the 172 too! lol.

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=207320 - Going dirt cheap!

Your 172 doesnt accelerate in fifth i would say mines good in fifth gear, but suppose they are all different

Not as much as I'd like to it to. My post was more sarcasm than fact, but I'm sure there's other cars similar to the 172 which pull faster in 5th. For car experts - is that because it's a close-ratio gear box?

I'd still love a 6th gear though.

The only reason I bought a 1.2 was because I wanted a new car but didnt want to pay a fortune on insurance since I was only a boy when I bought it.
Now im spending more time in my car and have more cash id like something a bit faster.
