1.6 16v

Hey there guys,

I've spent the last week driving about in a 2001 1.6 16v privilege lent to me by my girlfriend's mum, since I sold my last car and am looking for a new one.

I'm currently looking at a 1998 1.6 16v Laguna RT Sport (because, for some reason, they're a lot cheaper than clio's of a similar age...) and having looked on the Parker's website at the technical spec of both, the only thing that's different engine wise is that the clio is multipoint injection and the laguna is just injection.

What I'm wondering is whether the clio and the laguna have the same engine. Do any of you guys know?

I hope it does because that Clio's engine is immense. It growls like a mini Impreza when you put your foot down. Beautiful.


Also, and I know this isn't a place for Laguna advice but, does anyone know of any common faults to look out for while looking around and testing a 98 laguna?

lagunas are a beyatch, compared to the Clios.
In Trinidad here, the laguna are not popular as the other Renault vehicles.

The reason they're cheaper is because they're shite! 110bhp dragging a laguna round, might as well push it.

I'm not actually after a performance car. My budget's £1000. If I were going to get a performance car for £1000, I'd expect to be pushing it around (once I took it off the blocks it was standing on).

I'm after a car that's gonna lug my drums about in without any hassle and get me down the shops and the gym just dandily.
Both of the above reasons are why I sold my Megane Coupé.

They're not very reliable at the best of time and I understand your not after a performance car but it'll be very god damn slow.

If it was my £1000 then i'd be getting a Mk2 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X on high miles with full service history (must have!). Its a brilliant car for the money, plenty of toys, nice to drive and pretty damn bulletproof and as long as its been serviced properly will run fovever. A mate of mine bought one for 1k with 108k on it and it drove like it had half that on it, didn't feel tired at all. He chopped it in a year later on 123k only spending money on petrol and servicing for not a lot less than he payed.

Just been to have a look at it, and walked away before I even asked for the keys to check out the inside. It's got a huge scrape on the O/S rear quarter and a dent on the N/S front wing. Looks terrible!

Disagree i would soon rather have a old laguna rather than a mondeo. i think the older lagunas are not to bad. i would go for a 1.8 16v though. i never had a problem with them

I'm not sure i'd be able to 100% trust an older laguna of this age and price, and I imagine (haven't looked a lagunas in depth) that your getting a lot more in the ford than the renault. Just depends if you have this weird thing against fords people seem to have :S, bloody brilliant cars imo.

Although I get the feeling i'm wasting my breath and the o/p is just going to buy a laguna anyway :dapprove:.

Eh?? Are you sure your not on about Laguna2s?

The 2.0 8v and 1.8 8v in the Laguna1 are still probably the most reliable reliable engines going! Laguna1s are solid, they're built like a tank.

one of our loan cars is a 1.6 16v laguna. It's great, not likely to set anyone's world on fire but it's not a lumbering slug. I thought about one as a load hauler/daily b**ch vehicle after rebuilding the top end on ours.

Excellent stuff. Then I'll still persue a Laguna.

I know they're solid as a rock cos my old lady used to have one till she flipped it over a couple of times round a wet corner. Bearly any damage to the body really, all things considering.

If I haven't found one soon I may have a second look at the one I looked at today. But hopefully not. Espesh as I don't like silver cars. Gross.

Yeah thanks Tom. My dad had a 2.0 8v laguna it was brill and never went wrong in 5 years of ownership.
Just make sure the cambelt has been done etc and the coils are fairly new.
avoid ones that look like they have been used for hard work
although i know of one taxi around my way is on 300k
